Achieving Balance: Anacapa Island
The seabirds on Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California were in significant decline due in large part to predation by the non-native Black Rat. In order to restore balance to the Anacapa Island ecosystem, a group of non-profit, government and educational organizations came together to remove the Black Rat in 2001 and 2002. Ten years after removing the non-native rats, the ecosystem on Anacapa Island is showing profound results of recovery, including increased numbers of the endangered Xantus’ Murrelet seabird.
